12 Interesting Things To Do This Autumn Just Because

Who says your fall plans must consist of the same five activities every year?

Don’t get me wrong, I love a cosy evening as much as the next girl, but there are so many other interesting things you could be doing this season.

Some are a little random, some require a bit of planning, and others are simply things you’ve probably been meaning to try for ages.

And no, you don’t need a particularly good reason to do any of them.

So if you’re ready to add a little bit more colour to your chilly autumn days, here are 12 fun and interesting things you can do this fall season.

Let’s Dive In :)

1. Book Yourself A Little Autumn Getaway

It doesn’t have to be costly, but don’t tell me that even just one night at a cosy hotel doesn’t sound appealing.

Whether it’s a one-day trip to a city you’ve never visited or a weekend away somewhere peaceful, I think there’s something quite exciting about temporarily removing yourself from your usual surroundings.

You don’t even need an itinerary packed with activities. Sometimes, exploring somewhere new, ordering room service and waking up in a ridiculously comfortable bed is more than enough.

 2. Plan The Perfect Fall Photoshoot

Whenever I go anywhere, my first thought is hardly ever to pull out my phone and snap a picture.

I simply forget. And honestly, sometimes I just don’t want to.

So, instead, I’ve learnt to be a little more intentional about it. I’ll choose a setting, plan an outfit and actually put a date in my diary to take pictures.

I’ve never done this specifically for fall, but it’s definitely something I’ll be trying this year.

I can see the vision already: the perfect brown outfit, yellow, orange and red leaves scattered everywhere, sitting on a bench and effortlessly avoiding eye contact with the camera.

Or perhaps an indoor photoshoot?

Hmm…I’ll have to spend some time on Pinterest getting a better picture of what I want.

3. Make A Ridiculously Good Fall Milkshake

No, I don’t mean diabetes in a cup, but I do mean a milkshake that tastes just as delicious as it looks.

Think caramel, cinnamon, chocolate, pumpkin spice or whatever combination sounds good to you.

Get creative with the toppings, find yourself a pretty glass and make something that looks like it belongs on a café menu.

Add some popcorn, and you’ve officially got yourself a movie night.

 4. Make A PowerPoint About Something You’re Ridiculously Passionate About

When was the last time you researched something, gathered your findings and presented your opinions in a way that was genuinely exciting to look at?

Better yet, when was the last time you had a passion project? Something you worked on not because it would benefit you financially or strategically, but simply because you enjoyed doing it?

Create a PowerPoint or little booklet about something that interests you. It could be a country you’ve always wanted to visit, a historical event, a controversial opinion, a scientific curiosity or a topic you suddenly find yourself wanting to know everything about.

Design it however you like. Make it funny, educational, dramatic or detailed.

Maybe you’ll turn it into a video or share it with other people who find the subject as fascinating. Who knows?

And if you have absolutely no idea where to start, I’m planning to share my own passion-project/ booklet template to help you get going.

5. Challenge Yourself To Put Together A £20 Outfit

Whenever I go shopping, I’m always happy, especially when the outfits I’ve been imagining finally start coming to life.

However, that joy gets stuck somewhere in my throat whenever I look over my spending and realise I’ve spent far too much.

Yes, I’m happy with the clothes, and I’ll probably get over the damage eventually, but it feels so much better when you manage to put together an amazing outfit for far less than you expected.

You get to enjoy the shopping without the guilt afterwards.

So here’s the challenge: give yourself £20 and create the best outfit you can.

6. Host A Three-Course Dinner Night At Home

It could be for yourself, your family or your friends. Whether you want to make it feel like a proper event or keep things casual is entirely up to you.

Personally, since fall brings that cosy atmosphere, I’m thinking of dedicating an evening to giving my family a taste of Michelin-star restaurant food right at home.

Well, that’s the ambition, anyway.

The dress code? Comfy robes and fun slippers.

I think this would be an especially good opportunity for me to practise cooking and experiment with recipes I wouldn’t ordinarily attempt.

And once in a while, taking the time to prepare a starter, main course and dessert is something I’d feel quite proud of, especially if everyone leaves the table smiling.

7. Turn An Ordinary Fall Day Into A Short Film

With the way everything looks on social media, it’s easy to feel like a video needs to be highly aesthetic to be worth making.

Matching products, the perfect outfit, perfect lighting, a perfect face and, of course, perfect weather.

Otherwise, what’s the point?

But it doesn’t have to be that way, and you certainly don’t need to approach your own memories with that mindset.

This video is for you.

Take random clips throughout an ordinary day. The walk to the shops, your breakfast, the view from the bus, your outfit, something funny that happened.

Put everything together, add some music and watch your little creation.

Forget about getting all the perfect angles. Not everything needs to look like a Pinterest board to be worth remembering.

8. Build The Ultimate Fall Snack Board

It’s autumn. Come on.

Kick your feet up, put on Gilmore Girls and surround yourself with your favourite snacks.

I’m talking three or four sweet and savoury treats arranged together, a nice drink, perhaps a board game to the side and a comfort show playing in the background.

You could even make it a themed snack board with caramel popcorn, chocolate-covered strawberries, cinnamon biscuits, mini pastries and whatever else you’re craving.

Nothing particularly complicated. Just an excuse to make an ordinary evening a little more enjoyable.

9. Go On A Quest To Find Your Perfect Fall Perfume

I used to spend so much money on body mists so that I could have a variety of scents instead of investing in one really good perfume that doesn’t hesitate to announce my presence in a room without me saying a thing.

Now I’m on a little quest to find my perfect seasonal perfumes. One for spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Just four because I love that idea.

I actually get a lot of enjoyment from researching fragrance notes, comparing perfumes and figuring out the exact scent and aesthetic I’m looking for and finally entering a perfume shop to get the exact perfume I need.

I encourage you this fall to attend a perfume-making workshop, experiment with layering perfumes you already own, or spend an afternoon testing fragrances because we need a signature scent this fall.

Below are four scents worth getting your nose into. Check out the soft life shop for more.

10. Enter A Competition Just To See What Happens

When was the last time you put your name forward for something?

Not necessarily because you were certain you’d win, but because you genuinely wanted to take part?

There’s something exciting about working towards a deadline, putting your abilities to the test and knowing that other people are giving it their best shot, too.

It could be a photography competition, writing contest, design challenge, baking competition or something completely outside your usual interests.

And imagine seeing your name announced as one of the winners!

Of course, you don’t have to place for the experience to be worthwhile. Sometimes, having something to prepare for and feeling proud enough of your work to submit it is satisfying in itself.

 11. Make A Mini Magazine About Your Life Right Now

Forget Instagram highlights for a moment.

Imagine having a physical magazine about your life sitting on your coffee table or displayed on your bookshelf.

Something you can actually pick up, flip through and show someone when they come over.

Online photo storage is convenient, of course, but there’s something about gathering your pictures, little memories, favourite things and personal stories into something physical.

You could include recent photographs, places you’ve visited, things you’ve been loving, funny conversations, current goals, little interviews with yourself or even a page dedicated to your latest opinions.

And no, creating a magazine about your own life is not narcissistic.

I think it’s rather lovely to document who you are while you’re still living that particular chapter.

12. Create Something You Can Actually Wear

The perfect fall hobby, if you ask me.

It’s time to get the crochet hooks, yarn, fabric and sewing machines out.

Instead of buying yet another piece of clothing, imagine spending a few evenings making something yourself.

A scarf, knitted cardigan, crochet bag, skirt, hair accessory or even a simple alteration to something you already own.

It doesn’t need to be particularly ambitious, especially if you’re a beginner.

I just think there’s something so satisfying about being able to say, when someone compliments your outfit, that you actually made part of it yourself.

And if it turns out a little wonky? Well, at least you’ve got a story to tell.

Wait! Before you go, here's a quote for you to take while you leave:
